Yoshi's Crafted World Ride The Stars

Unlike the other Blockafellers, this square fellow isn’t interested in souvenirs; rather, he’d rather play some hide-and-seek! The 43 levels of Yoshi’s Crafted World are his playground, and with him hiding in that compact little box of his, you may have a tough time hunting him down. Walk underneath the tin platform to reveal a hidden winged question mark cloud. Hit the cloud and several coins will drop. 2 of them are Red. Flower 1 on the Left Tin Platform. These cannot be eaten but the foam can be removed with one Egg or Yoshi's tongue. After that, just toss an Egg at the Clawdaddy. After that, just toss an Egg at the Clawdaddy. You can also ground pound it.

Overview[edit]

Front side[edit]

The level starts out with a space-themed Shy Guy, then another Shy Guy along two swinging UFOs. Yoshi then enters a large plastic bottle, which he then quickly drops out of. There is then a trail of comets or shooting stars Yoshi can ride on or follow. Nearby, there is a small, purplish star in the background. Yoshi can hit it to reveal a Smiley Flower, which he can then hit to collect. Around this point, space-themed Fly Guys start to appear. After a small space shuttle, there are three comet trails. The bottom trail lets Yoshi pick up three Red Coins. The middle trail lets Yoshi pick up six regular coins. The top trail leads to three Fly Guys, then a Smiley Flower. Shortly after this is a Winged Cloud containing five hearts.

Just after this Winged Cloud, there is a Fly Guy moving between two swaying planets: a smaller, orange planet and a medium-sized, brownish planet with a ring. There is a Winged Cloud above the bigger, brown planet Yoshi can hit to reveal a UFO to the left, which drops down suddenly. Hopping onto this UFO drops down another UFO, which Yoshi can then hop on to drop down a smiling crescent moon with the third Smiley Flower. There are three red coins between these two UFOs. After all this, there is an Egg Block, then a mobile with four objects. Three are modeled after planets, while one is a small rocket with a red coin inside and a space-themed Bazooka Heyho on top. Just after the mobile is the first Checkpoint Bell.

After the first checkpoint, there is a long section with trails of comets and shooting stars. Along the way, there are three red coins and a Winged Timer Cloud. Yoshi can hit the Winged Timer Cloud to flip the screen, revealing three spinning yellow UFOs, with three flowers below each. Most of these flowers are Fooly Flowers, although one hidden among them is a Smiley Flower. Yoshi must locate and hit it in the given time to collect it. After this comet section, there is a second mobile, with a Smiley Flower in the rocket and a Bazooka Heyho on the other side. Above the Bazooka Heyho is a Winged Cloud containing five hearts. Just after this mobile is another mobile. To the right is a juice bottle rocket with an Egg Block. In the background, Yoshi can spot two Fly Guys, one of them holding a red coin. By defeating them both, a star drops down and some coins appear. The second Checkpoint Bell is also seen in the background.

After passing the second checkpoint, there is one last long comet section. Near the start, there are four red coins and a Winged Cloud Yoshi can hit to reveal several coins surrounding a Smiley Flower just below. Ahead of this is a small space shuttle platform with an Egg Block and a Winged Cloud containing five hearts. In the background, a juice bottle rocket can be spotted with a present box. This present box contains multiple coins as well as one red coin.

Near the end of this section, where the goal arrow is, a separate trail can be spotted, guiding comets and shooting stars up to the left, rather than ahead to the right. If Yoshi rides the comets up the separate trail, it takes him to a separate planet with the seventh and final Smiley Flower. Near the very end of the section, below the trails, there is a paper plate UFO with three red coins. At last, after riding one last comet trail, Yoshi reaches a prepared rocket. Once Yoshi boards this rocket, the Cybos holding it in place release hold, launching it past a few waves of coins to the end of the level, where Yoshi simply needs to walk to the goal.

Flip side[edit]

  • Shortly after the first Checkpoint Bell, the cyan Poochy Pup is in the rocket of the second mobile, where the fifth Smiley Flower is normally found.
  • Just after the second checkpoint and the third mobile, Yoshi must hit the Winged Cloud hovering over the brown planet. Rather than leading him to a Smiley Flower in a moon, the second UFO that drops down has the black Poochy Pup hanging from underneath it.
  • Close to the end of the level, the pink Poochy Pup is in the large plastic bottle.

Collectibles[edit]

Smiley Flowers[edit]

  • Smiley Flower 1: Near the start of the level, after an unusually large, blue, smiling star in the background, there is a much smaller, purplish, star with jagged teeth. Yoshi must hit this star with an egg to flip it, revealing the first Smiley Flower stuck to the other side. Yoshi must then toss another egg at the flower to collect it.
  • Smiley Flower 2: Near the end of the next comet section, higher up, near a Goonie constellation.
  • Smiley Flower 3: Shortly after the second comet section, just before the first mobile, there is a medium-sized, brownish planet with a ring. There is a Winged Cloud above it Yoshi must hit to start a sequence to the left. First, two UFOs drop down, then a blue, smiling crescent moon with the third Smiley Flower.
  • Smiley Flower 4: In the middle of the comet section after the first Checkpoint Bell, there is a Winged Timer Cloud above three connected stars. Yoshi must hit the Winged Timer Cloud to flip the screen, revealing three spinning yellow UFOs, with three flowers below each. Most of these are Fooly Flowers, although one is a Smiley Flower. Yoshi must hit it before time runs out to collect it.
  • Smiley Flower 5: One of the objects in the second mobile is a small, open rocket with the fifth Smiley Flower inside. Yoshi must align the objects in a way allowing him to enter the rocket and get the flower.
  • Smiley Flower 6: At some point in the long comet section after the second Checkpoint Bell, there is a Winged Cloud. Hitting it reveals the Smiley Flower and surrounding coins just below.
  • Smiley Flower 7: Near the end of the last comet section and near the end of the level, where the goal arrow is seen, there is a separate route of traveling comets moving up to the left. Yoshi must follow them to find a lonely planet with the seventh and final Smiley Flower. Sprout's box and the Spirited Star can also be found in this area.

Three more Smiley Flowers are awarded for collecting at least 100 coins in the level, completing the level with 20 hearts, and collecting all 20 Red Coins. In the flip side, three are awarded for bringing all three Poochy Pups to the goal, and one more for doing so within three minutes and thirty seconds.

Crafts[edit]

Found on the flip side:

  • Alien Friend 1: The blue, lanky alien is at the location of the lonely planet, where the seventh Smiley Flower, the Spirited Star, and Sprout's box are usually found, on a UFO close in the background.
  • Alien Friend 2: At the location of the first Checkpoint Bell, just left of the first mobile, the orange, big-fisted alien is in one of two holes of a flat moon in the background.
  • Alien Friend 3: The green, cyan-face alien is just after that, attached to one of the objects on the first mobile.
  • Alien Friend 4: The orange, small alien is in the foreground on the same platform as the second Checkpoint Bell.
  • Alien Friend 5: In the long, comet-filled section after the second checkpoint and third mobile, the green, waving alien is on a small space shuttle in the background.
  • Alien Friend 6: Shortly after that, in the plastic bottle where the pink Poochy Pup is found, in the background, seen through the middle hole.

Found on the front side:

  • Spirited Star: At the location of the lonely planet, where the seventh Smiley Flower and Sprout's box are also found, hanging close in the background near some constellations.

Found on the front side:

  • Stylish UFO: After the first Checkpoint Bell, Yoshi must hop onto the Egg Block, then onto the second mobile. The stylish UFO, pink with a red ribbon and yellow windows, is hanging in the background next to a green UFO with blue windows.

Sprout[edit]

On the lonely planet, where the seventh Smiley Flower and the Spirited Star are also found, Sprout's box is on the ring.

The Sundream Stone shines over Yoshi’s Island and makes the land warm and bright. When Baby Bowser learns that the Sundream Stone has the potential to fulfill the owner’s wildest dreams, he and Kamek set out to steal it…but instead send the gems scattering across the island. It is up to Yoshi and his brothers to retrieve the gems and restore the Sundream Stone before it is too late.

Developed by Good-Feel and published by Nintendo, Yoshi’s Crafted World is a side-scrolling platformer. Following Yoshi’s Woolly World in 2015, the game was released for the Nintendo Switch and received positive reviews.

The Yoshi games are always a bit iffy for me. I like some of their creativity, but in general, the challenge level of the games isn’t that hard. Unlike a story driven game, you are essentially playing it to play it…and occasionally, the game does things to be real creative, but it doesn’t necessarily feel compelling.

Yoshi's Crafted World Ride The Stars Lyrics

Burt the Ball, we’re coming for you!

The game is typical Mario filtered through Yoshi wish Yoshi trying to collect lost gems on Yoshi Island’s and Baby Bowser and Kamek dogging them the entire way. The Yoshi games are slick and intuitive, but they are also not to the level of difficulty of New Super Mario or Donkey Kong games. I wish that between Yoshi-Kirby-Mario-Donkey Kong that Nintendo would find a nice happy medium side scroller that doesn’t bore nor makes you want to pull you hair out.

The controls for the game are pretty consistent with other Yoshi games and are easy to master. With the “hover jump”, it is much easy to save yourself and accuracy isn’t a priority. The game varies control gameplay by having levels where Yoshi’s movements control cars, fly planes, or track levels where the goal is to get a certain number of points in essentially a shooting fest. There is variety in the controls, but I wish that the “special levels” were more regular and less one-offs…fortunately, there isn’t a ton of the irritating Poochy.

Wow…Baby Bowser got big…what a shock! (said no one)

Poochys Tape Trail Last Flower

What Yoshi succeeds in creativity. Woolly World crafted Yoshi out of yarn and played with the idea of crafting and “homemade Yoshi”. This entry steps up the craft approach and creates worlds in a pop-up book fashion. The surroundings are made of man-made material (kind of like the miniature world of Pikmin) and these are often used creatively like the taped boxes of Cheery Valley’s “Open, Shut!” or the mobiles of Outer Orbit’s “Ride the Stars”.

Poochys Sweet Run Yoshi Cookies

Yoshi’s Crafted World is long and there is a lot of replay to it (each level has a number of flowers to collect in multiple run-throughs with “find” missions). In that sense, the game is a great purchase. It will keep you busy but taking breaks in playing it will be mandatory since the Crafted World sometimes feels a bit repetitive…but always manages to do with style.
