Yoshi's Crafted World Bosses
It's hard not to love Kirby and Yoshi but what if you had to choose between the two? Let's explore them as characters as well as take a look at their games and see which cutie comes out on top.
Puffball vs. Dinosaur
For starters, I'll discuss the two characters in general. Kirby is a pink puffball of an unknown species from a place simply known as Dream Land who debuted in the Game Boy game Kirby's Dream Land. He often finds himself battling powerful beings who try and succeed in accomplishing dastardly deeds. Why they just can't leave the little guy alone is beyond me. On a much more down-to-earth note, Yoshi premiered in Super Mario World as a friendly fellow who assists Mario on his journey to defeat Bowser in Dinosaur Land. From then on, the two seem to have formed quite a fruitful relationship. By that, I mean that Mario gets to ride Yoshi around and Yoshi gets all sorts of delicious fruits. Both characters are cheerful and charming chums with simple back-stories yet if I had to choose one as a character, I'd pick Kirby as his mysterious nature opens many possibilities for memorable adventures.
Copying Chums vs. Laying Eggs
Next up, let's explore both characters' abilities. Needless to say, they each have insatiable appetites but what they do with their meals is very different. Kirby sucks up his enemies and swallows them to copy their abilities as well as some of their physical traits. Meanwhile, Yoshi latches onto foes with his long and presumably super-sticky tongue only to eat them then poop them out as useful throwable eggs. I don't remember that from biology class. Both characters also jump differently as Kirby can inhale to puff himself up and fly over stages while Yoshi can flutter his legs to extend his leaps. Obviously, Kirby has a much more versatile set of abilities but Yoshi's limitations often make him more enjoyable to play as. For that simple reason, I'll choose Yoshi as the winner of this category.
Dream Land vs. Island
It's now time for the games! To start things off, I'll discuss everyone's favourite Kirby and Yoshi experiences; the platformers. Kirby has starred in many platformers from the simplistic Kirby's Dream Land where he couldn't even copy enemies to the super-cute Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. His later adventures would mix up the gameplay formula further by him splitting into four fellows in Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, piloting mech suits in Kirby: Planet Robobot, and perpetually moving in Kirby: Canvas Curse and Kirby and the Rainbow Curse.
Yoshi hasn't been on as many adventures but Yoshi's Island is one of the greatest 2D platformers ever created. Talk about a breakout debut starring role! After that, he's had some goofy portable platformers including the tilt-driven Yoshi Topsy-Turvy, the touch-based Yoshi Touch & Go, and a couple of Yoshi's Island sequels. And who could forget the mouth-watering Yoshi's Story?

Oddly enough, both Kirby and Yoshi starred in their own woolly adventures with Kirby's Epic Yarn and Yoshi's Woolly World thanks to the talented developers at Good-Feel. Both of those games are phenomenal and great fun to play cooperatively with a friend. I could talk about these games all day but I really should make a decision who has the better platformers. Even though Kirby has many more, I'm going to choose Yoshi in this category for the simple fact that Yoshi's Island is an absolute masterpiece.
Stacking Stars vs. Baking Cookies
Finally, both characters have their fair share of spin-offs. Kirby went golfing in Kirby's Dream Course, matched Puyo in Kirby's Avalanche, stacked stars in Kirby's Star Stacker, rolled around in Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble, raced against his friends in Kirby Air Ride, and even became a pinball in Kirby's Pinball Land. Meanwhile, Yoshi hatched eggs in the simplistic self-titled puzzle game Yoshi, baked cookies in Yoshi's Cookie, and fired his Super Scope in Yoshi's Safari. Wait, that's it?! Well, I guess Kirby clearly wins this category.
To be frank, the only good Yoshi spin-off is Yoshi's Cookie which is a rather addictive puzzler. However, Kirby knocks it out of the park with a huge variety of top-notch side games. Heck, even the Breakout clone Kirby's Block Ball is a ton of fun. That being said, I guess I should mention that Tetris Attack (a port of Panel de Pon with Yoshi's Island characters) is a fantastic competitive puzzler.

Even though Kirby and Yoshi are equally cute and it's a very close call, there can be only one winner so I choose...

Yoshi's Island may be one of the greatest games ever made but the amount of fantastic adventures and top-notch spin-offs that Kirby has starred in over the years is definitely nothing to sneeze at. It's true that I generally enjoy playing as Yoshi more due to his often challenging gameplay but Kirby's colourful adventures are much more memorable and varied. It was a tough decision but I eventually chose Kirby as the winner by a slight margin. In the end, perhaps Nintendo should give Yoshi the spotlight more often. He really is an underrated little fellow who deserves more than his usual guest character appearances.
